Capricorn New Moon

December's New Moon takes place in the committed, grounded and ambitious zodiac sign of Capricorn, and it packs some serious punch this year. As well as highlighting the Capricorn themes of focus, discipline and structure, this New Moon also aligns with the Sun and the Earth to form a solar eclipse, a burst of new energy and a strong initiator of change.

As if that wasn't enough, the eclipse is also conjunct Jupiter, planet of growth, expansion and good fortune, and trine Uranus, planet of surprises, revolution and big ideas. In short, this is an opportune time to think big, to map out your ambitions and to start to take practical, attainable steps towards meeting your goals. Think patience, in it for the long-term commitment and you're on the right track.

While represented in modernity by the mountain goat, in antiquity Capricorn was symbolized by the legendary creature, the sea-goat. There are many theories surrounding this mystical image including links to the half-goat, half-fish Sumerian god of wisdom, Enki. With water representing the emotional realm and earth the physical, I like to think of the sea-goat as representing the emotional drives behind the scenes, pushing and advancing our dreams and desires into the material realm.

This isn't a New Moon for the ethereal or the intangible, it's a time for perseverance, to get real and to be held accountable. While increased self-love or mindfulness for example are always worthy intentions, this energy calls for something that satisfies your deepest needs and desires, something that can be seen, weighed, built or measured in the physical world.

To think Capricorn is to think that anything worth having is worth working hard for. Where in your life can you step up? What can you sacrifice?

Keywords are: patience, organization, control, ambition, strategy and manifesting through commitment to action. Myself and my partner are using this energy to create a joint budget, to set a savings goal and a deadline to purchase our dream property together. What actions will you commit to taking?

Suggestion: Create an altar in a safe space and place your goals here. Meditate and feel your intentions, visualize and commit to them. Adorn the altar with Capricorn symbols and 'correspondences', objects that have a natural affinity with the sign:

Colours: black, grey, brown, green

Herbs/garden: jasmine, poppy, thyme, vervain, comfrey, cinnamon

Stones: carnelian, hematite, jet, onyx, smoky quartz, tourmaline
